Neuroscience research training opportunities in Edinburgh for clinicians

Edinburgh offers outstanding research training opportunities for all ambitious clinical trainees interested in academic neurology, neurosurgery, neuropathology, neuroradiology and psychiatry. It has a world-class reputation in both clinical and basic neurological research and an excellent track record in mentoring and nurturing aspiring academic clinicians from PhD through to Professorial level. This includes the Edinburgh Clinical Academic Training (ECAT) scheme that offers bespoke run-through training that combines a fully funded PhD and an academic lectureship leading to CCST. Currently there are six Wellcome / MRC Clinical Research Training Fellows, one MRC Senior Fellow and two Wellcome / MRC intermediate fellows plus fellowships from the Health Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Stroke Association, MS Society and Chief Scientist's Office.

Major research strengths include: Stroke ( Sandercock / Sudlow / Mcleod / Salman / Dennis / Mead / Wardlaw); Neuroimaging (Wardlaw); Neuro-regeneration - MS & MND (Chandran); Prion diseases and Dementia (Knight); Neuro-oncology (Grant); Psychiatric disorders especially schizophrenia, bipolar disorders (Blackwood/Johnstone/Lawrie), psychological medicine (Sharpe) and childhood epilepsy (Chin). Research opportunities in all these disciplines range from basic laboratory research such as disease modelling using human stem cells through to clinical trials, disease surveillance and observational cohort studies. Research is undertaken across the Edinburgh campus that includes a large amount of basic and translational neurological research at two MRC Centres: Regenerative Medicine and Centre for Inflammation Research.
